You really will be spoilt for things to do in Brisbane, the capital of the ‘Sunshine State’. Queensland’s largest conurbation combines a little history with a lot of energy. It’s the natural gateway to the sun and surf of the glittering Gold and Sunshine Coasts but also has a thriving culture and creative side. Little wonder then that the ‘banana benders’ reckon that it’s Australia’s ‘most liveable city’!
Things to do....
Brisbane Attractions
Bustling Brisbane brings it all together. Crammed with culture, blessed by the sun and close to the surf, it’s a popular leg of the Ashes tour. Muster the strength to visit Fortitude Valley and you’ll be rewarded with the finest Chinese cuisine and brightest nightlife. You should also be on the lookout for Mount Coot-tha and its panoramic views of Brisbane’s skyline. Here’s a taste of some other Brisbane highlights.
The XXXX Brewery
While some travellers are laid back about where they go, others give a XXXX. Australia’s iconic heritage alehouse has been brewing since the 1870s. If you’ve a thirst for knowledge, then you can explore the story of beer in the heart of the XXXX Brewery, then head for the bar for a tasting session. A tip – XXXX brewery tours last approximately an hour, tastings may take a little longer!
South Bank Highlights
A stroll along Brisbane’s sunny South Bank provides a glimpse of Australia’s best bits in microcosm. Here you’ll find an enticing inner-city beach and miles of shady, tree-lined footpaths. Taking advantage of the tourist footfall are some great shops and many of Brisbane’s best restaurants. A birds-eye view of the city, on the Wheel of Brisbane, rounds off the day nicely.
Take a Brisbane River Cruise
Meandering, fast flowing or tempting, the Brisbane River is the artery that replenishes and occasionally threatens this great city. A Brisbane river excursion is top of many people’s Brisbane to do list. You can always hop on board the CityCat, Brisbane’s best form of public transport but there are other options. The paddleboat Kookaburra Queen’s seafood buffet or a romantic gondola trip offer something a little special.
Culture Queensland Style
Australians may almost revel in their unsophisticated tag but deep down they love a bit of culture. The Cultural Precinct on the South Bank shows they’re serious about the finer things in life. Here you can take in the Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Art Gallery, Queensland Conservatorium, Queensland Performing Arts Centre and (breathe) the Sciencentre-hosting Queensland Museum all in one place.
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Australia’s cutest marsupial beckons at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. This family-friendly attraction, just half an hour from Brisbane, is teeming with a satisfyingly large range of Aussie fauna. You’ll find kangaroos, Tasmanian devils, wombats, dingoes and kookaburras, all featuring on a daily programme of educational shows. And yes, you can cuddle a koala (or a python) if you like!
