We have a lot to look forward to after an awful year!
Since my last blog way back in August, things are beginning to feel so very different, but yet the same. The same in as much as we have gone full circle with lockdowns, but at least we now have a vaccine which is beginning to pick up momentum, hopefully we are not far away, although things do seem pretty scary at present!
Before lockdown I applied for a ticket to see Chelsea, which was open to all season ticket holders. I was extremely lucky to be able to be allocated the last champions league game as was Simon who travels with us – has become a friend apart from the cricket as we share the same love for the Blues!
It was an experience like no other. Just 2,000 there. Having already qualified the atmosphere wasn’t the best but it was so good to get out! We all had to complete a self declaration form, be temperature checked on arrival and once inside the stadium we had to sanitize our hands. There were units stationed all around the concourse and of course we all had to wear a mask, something I never thought I would see!
Since August not much has happened and the announcement in November that the Holland tour was added to those that have already fallen because of Covid was a real blow – our short term focus had gone. Sara had kept busy working on sorting out paperwork from abortive tours and of course future tours where I have been doing other things. I’m still walking a lot, trying to remain healthy, and even started reading a book which I never do, albeit it is “Me” by Elton John!
Since the announcement of the vaccine, all of a sudden the phone has begun to ring! Most for the Ashes and some for the T20 World Cup in India, hopefully we will have more news on both those tours in the coming weeks!!
Last year end I decided we would have a good celebration with the vaccine here and seeing the back of 2020. On Christmas Day we planned it to a tee and stayed up to watch the opening session of Australia v India test at Melbourne, thinking in a year from now we will be there. The series has been extremely interesting, the Aussies appear to be up to their usual tricks. I’m sure the last test will have us all watching, with a reduced crowd and stump mics and cameras from every angle, it will surely wet our appetites for later in 2021 but first we will see England in Sri Lanka. Not sure I will be up at 04:30 but I should see quite a bit of it. I don’t really know what to expect from Sri Lanka, as they clearly are a team in transition, and we haven’t played test cricket since the Summer but day 2 has shown some excellent performances already.
A quick mention for one of our clients Trevor Vousden who is in Kings, London awaiting an unexpected heart op and who is suffering from the virus right now he caught whilst there. If anyone would like to connect then please let me know. The days are very long for him with no cricket to watch on TV. WE of course wish him a successful op and swift recovery in time for Melbourne 2021 – we first met in 2005 at the match.
