The Kimberley

The pearling capital of Australia, Broome is the western gateway to the Kimberley wilderness – home to world famous Cable Beach sunsets, striking rust-red cliffs, white sand and turquoise water and on certain dates from March to October, marvel at the natural phenomenon of the Staircase to the Moon. Gibb River Road
The Gibb River Road is one of the most famous and unique 4WD experiences in Australia. The 660 kilometre journey between Derby and Kununurra, takes visitors through the heart of one of the Kimberley. Accessible between May and October by 4WD or 4WD Motorhome, rest-stops include many of the Kimberley’s greatest treasures, from Bell Gorge and Windjana Gorge to El Questro Wilderness Park, the Cockburn Range and Home Valley Station.

When to visit
As a sub-tropical environment, the most popular time to visit is April to October with warm sunny days and cool pleasant evenings. From November to March the days can be hot and the nights balmy and rain can limit access to other regions, but with fewer crowds, it provides the opportunity to witness the thundering waterfalls, spectacular lighting shows and sunsets.

The Kimberley can be accessed through major airport terminals located in Broome and Kununurra with daily services from Perth. Direct air services from the east coast are available into Broome year round from Melbourne and seasonally from Sydney and Brisbane. Major cruise liners and expedition cruises call into Broome. Broome, Derby and Wyndham are the major port facilities for Kimberley cruises.
How to get around
For road trip visitors, Broome and Kununurra are depots for all major rental cars. Broome is also a depot for all major motorhome and camper hires. Broome offers a reliable bus system connecting visitors with the town centre and Cable Beach. Taxis can be found in regional centres throughout the Kimberley.
