which was set on the waterfront with absolutely fantastic views, and champagne all round. It was no surprise that it finished well into the night, everyone made new friends, and the scene was set for the ODI series.
We began at the iconic Newlands, for most, it was the best ground they have been to and who can argue with them? The backdrop from the mountain is just wonderful.
From memory it was the first time we have named a squad without a genuine fast bowler. It could be part of an experiment for the T20 World Cup. At Newlands after Morgan lost the toss, we posted 258 whilst losing wickets at crucial times, it was never going to be enough and South Africa eased home comfortably by 4 wickets.
At Durban it was one of the most frustrating days with the covers making regular appearances before the umpires called it a day. So we moved on to the final ODI at The ‘Bullring’ in Johannesburg. This time Morgan won the toss and elected to bowl due to overhead conditions. The team had many changes Ali & Rashid coming into the side and combined both bagged 5 wickets. Reducing South Africa to 256/7 in their 50 overs. Despite England once again doing their best to lose it we fell over the line with just 2 wickets to spare.
In the Evening it was our fairwell dinner. Our decision to hold the event in the hotel where we were all staying was justified as the rain came later than expected! A great night had by all, so many friendships made. I personally have made many new friends, and very much enjoyed being with everyone! I always seem to be saying the same after a tour, just a shame the rain fell in Durban the day of the game!
