Why the Caribbean is my favourite cricket destination

ICT tour manager Gary has been all around the world, but a trip to the Caribbean remains very special to him. Here’s why…

A captivating blend of sun-kissed beaches, rich culture and cricketing glory offers an irresistible escape, especially for cricket enthusiasts.

If you’re contemplating a spontaneous cricket vacation with a dose of T20 and one-day action, Antigua, Barbados and St Lucia provide the perfect backdrop.

Here’s a guide to making the most of your whirlwind adventure.

Antigua

The beach is just the beginning.

Dickenson Bay one of the island’s most popular beaches. Its powdery white sand and calm turquoise waters are perfect for an early-morning swim or a stroll.

With International Cricket Tours this winter, you’ll have the option of staying at Siboney Beach Club or Blue Waters Resort: both of which guarantee a comfortable and relaxing stay.

After soaking in the sun, explore Antigua’s rich history with a visit to Nelson Dockyard.

This beautifully restored naval dockyard dates back to the 18th century and offers a glimpse into the island’s colonial past. Named after Admiral Nelson, following a visit in 1784, it’s always been a favourite place of mine.

Shirley Heights is another of Antigua’s special locations: listen to the sounds of a steel band, taste fresh local barbecue and see the most amazing sunset, topped with spectacular views – including the dockyard!

The Sir Vivian Richards Stadium is where the island’s passion for cricket lies. What’s more, in my opinion the ground has the best food of any cricket stadium around the world. Deel the real Caribbean experience with a bouncing atmosphere and flowing rum punches!

Barbados

Barbados is not just another cricketing outpost. This beautiful island is a cultural hotspot. There are so many places you have to visit.

Its natural harbours are famous for crystal-clear waters and underwater shipwrecks, making it a paradise for snorkelers and divers.

Head to St Nicolas Abbey to see a beautifully preserved plantation house and rum distillery. The house offers tours that take you back in time, complete with rum tasting.

Talking of rum, visiting the Mount Gay distillery has always been a go-to trip of mine, together with Carlisle Bay, Speightstown, Holetown, Oistins fish market and Garrison Savanagh, where you can take in electrifying flat horse racing – the locals are mad about this sport.

Barbados is home to the iconic Kensington Oval, one of the most renowned cricket grounds in the world. The vibrant crowd dancing to the rhythmic beats of calypso bands wandering through the stands make it a night to remember, even before we get onto the action on the pitch!

St Lucia

Wrap up your West Indian adventure in St Lucia.

The stunning Pitons are perhaps the island’s most iconic landmarks. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the volcanic twin peaks are breathtaking and offer an incredible backdrop for your stay.

On a recent tour we had a great time taking a catamaran to the Pitons, before jumping into a mud bath in the sulphur springs, leaving us feeling completely re-energised.

The island also gives you golden sands and calm waters, making it perfect for a swim.

We’re going to the Caribbean… want to join us?

Ed, Sara and I will be accompanying our tour groups for the West Indies v England white-ball series this October and November.
