Eden Gardens may sound idyllic but it has a reputation for gladiatorial contests on a colossal scale. The fourth largest stadium in the world houses 66,000 rowdy fans and was revamped and spruced up for the 2011 World Cup. Prior to that up to 120,000 people could crowd into the packed stands. It has been said that no cricketer’s “cricketing education is complete till he has played in front of a packed Eden Gardens.” England won as recently as December 2012 and will be hoping to learn from that success.
