India Cricket Grounds

India Cricket Grounds – Our outline of the three cricket grounds playing host to the India v England 2016 test series being played in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai.

Eden Gardens Cricket Ground

Kolkata Cricket Ground.

Eden Gardens may sound idyllic but it has a reputation for gladiatorial contests on a colossal scale. The fourth largest stadium in the world houses 66,000 rowdy fans and was revamped and spruced up for the 2011 World Cup. Prior to that up to 120,000 people could crowd into the packed stands. It has been said that no cricketer’s “cricketing education is complete till he has played in front of a packed Eden Gardens.” England won as recently as December 2012 and will be hoping to learn from that success.

Wankhede Stadium

Mumbai Cricket Ground

Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium is positively intimate compared to other venues on the Indian tour. Hosting just over 33,000 it still packs a punch with a lively crowd and a testing playing surface. The ground is notable for witnessing the last ever match in the illustrious career of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and hosted the 2011 World Cup final where India triumphed over Sri Lanka. If England’s batsmen are on song they can hope to score heavily here, this is the ground where Ravi Shastri hit six sixes in an over.

The Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium

Delhi Cricket Ground

November the 29th 1987. Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister, a pint was 95p and T’Pau were number 1 in the charts. It was the last time India ever lost a test match at fortress Feroz Shah Kotla. Outbatted by Gordon Greenidge and Viv Richards, it took the mighty West Indies to beat India. This impressive ground has witnessed Anil Kumble’s 10 wickets in an innings against Pakistan and Sachin Tendulkar’s 35th test hundred. England’s cricketers will need to set some records of their own to notch up a historic victory in Fortress Feroz Shah.
